Individual and Couples Counseling

There are times in our lives that we lose our way. Those days that we wake up and wonder, “How did I get here?” Our addictions distract us. It’s easier to look at the phone, check social media, numb out with TV or substances than to face the pain or anxiety that grows underneath them. Loneliness, disconnection, fear, hopelessness or helplessness become impossible to look at. In our individual sessions, together we will work with the resistances, and then together move towards the painful places. This is where healing begins and life choices change.

I believe in creating a strong and trusting relationship with the people who choose to walk through my door. Individuals I work with come into my office feeling like something is blocking them from being who they want to be. Through our work together, you’ll feel heard and understood. Together, we’ll establish clear, obtainable goals. You’ll walk out with better appreciation of yourself, aware of who you are, and have a clearer picture of what you want and how to get there.

Couples I work with walk into my office often feel scared and angry. They are fearful of losing their partner and angry that their relationship is just spiraling out of control. At times they feel hopeless that it  will ever get better. They want to feel again in the relationship; to feel heard and respected. Our work together will help you and your partner clearly see the negative cycle that keeps you both stuck . You and your partner will begin to recognize that it is the “cycle” that is the problem, not the individuals. You will begin to see more love, empathy and compassion for each other and for yourself as we continue to explore your relationship.

My goal in our work is to increase empowerment and confidence. To help deepen connection to self and others. I am a certified therapist with Internal Family Systems (IFS). “IFS is a transformative, evidence-based model of psychotherapy. It believes the mind is naturally multiple and that is a good thing.  Our inner parts contain valuable qualities and our core Self knows how to heal, allowing us to become integrated and whole.” (IFS Institute website) For more information you can check out the Internal Family Systems website.  I also draw from other theories such as Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

There is no “one way” that therapy is achieved. Each individual has a unique system, and I believe in staying flexible with modalities of treatment. Your learning style is also incorporated into our work. We will engage movement, art, metaphor, psycho education – whatever works best for you in the moment. Maybe you feel comfortable sitting on the floor, maybe you don’t want to make eye contact, maybe you need more direction. Together we will find what works best for you. I work experientially, so rather than talking about the emotion, you will be asked to experience the emotion. This will allow for deeper understanding, and therefore rather than thinking about how to change, you will emotionally shift through the therapeutic experience.
